Who Are SEVENTEEN? Complete Fan Guide

If you love K-pop, chances are you’ve heard of SEVENTEEN. But if you haven’t, that’s okay too.

Maybe Super took over your FYP. Maybe you’ve been yelling “AJU NICE!” since 2016. Or maybe someone tried explaining how a group called SEVENTEEN has 13 members and somehow you left with even more questions.

We get it. It’s all good.

Welcome to the Fandom

SEVENTEEN (세븐틴) is one of K-pop’s biggest groups, known for insanely synchronized performances, self-produced music, 13 very different personalities, and enough chaos to send you straight down a late-night YouTube rabbit hole.

Whether you’re trying to learn the SEVENTEEN members, find your bias, prep for your first concert, or get back into K-pop after your Tumblr-era stan days, we’ve got you.

Here’s your SEVENTEEN starter pack. 💎

SEVENTEEN At A Glance

SEVENTEEN debuted on May 26, 2015, under PLEDIS Entertainment, now part of HYBE. So it’s been over 10 years of talent, entertainment, and fan obsession.

If you were around for third-gen K-pop, congratulations. We’re nostalgic now.

Their iconic greeting is “SAY THE NAME! SEVENTEEN! Hello, we are SEVENTEEN!”

Fans are officially called CARATs, representing the people who make the group shine like diamonds. Their official colors are rose quartz and serenity.

Why Does SEVENTEEN Have 13 Members?

No, you didn’t miscount. And we understand if you’re confused.

Before debut, PLEDIS Entertainment introduced trainees through a live web show called SEVENTEEN TV. The lineup changed during the group’s pre-debut years, but the SEVENTEEN name stayed and eventually got a new meaning.

The math is actually pretty easy: 13 members + 3 sub-units + 1 team = 17.

See? You’re already getting it.

SEVENTEEN Members Profile & Sub-Unit Breakdown

Thirteen members sounds like a lot to learn.

Don’t worry. We see great things in your fandom future. Pretty soon you’ll be explaining it without blinking an eye.

SEVENTEEN is split into three official units based on different skills:

Unit

Leader

Main Focus

Hip-Hop Team

S.Coups

Rap, songwriting, and rap writing

Vocal Team

Woozi

Performance Team

Hoshi

Three units. Thirteen members. One very, very synchronized and talented team.

And yes, there are sub-units beyond the main three.

You’ll probably hear about BSS pretty quickly. The trio of Hoshi, DK, and Seungkwan debuted as SEVENTEEN’s first official sub-unit.

There are other member pairings and units to discover too, but don’t worry about memorizing all of them yet.

You have 13 names to learn first. 😭

One minute you’re trying to tell Woozi and Hoshi apart. The next minute you’re explaining BSS to your friends.

What Is SEVENTEEN Doing in 2026?

If you’re becoming a CARAT in 2026, you might notice something pretty quickly. You aren’t always seeing all 13 members together.

Don’t panic. SEVENTEEN isn’t disappearing.

Here’s what’s happening:

1. Some Members Are Completing Military Service

SEVENTEEN is currently in a different era as members complete South Korea’s mandatory military service.

Jeonghan has completed his service and is back. Wonwoo, Hoshi, Woozi, and Vernon are currently serving, while DK, Mingyu, Seungkwan, and Dino have confirmed service dates coming up later in 2026.

S.Coups is exempt from mandatory service, while Joshua, Jun, and The8 are foreign nationals.

Translation? The SEVENTEEN lineup you see throughout 2026 is going to keep changing. But the group isn’t disappearing.

That means full 13-member music activities are more limited right now.

2. The Remaining Members Are Still Active

This is not a full stop.

Members can still stay busy through:

  • Solo music

  • Sub-units

  • Acting projects

  • TV and show appearances

  • Pre-recorded content

  • Other individual projects

So even if all 13 members aren’t promoting together, there’s still plenty happening.

3. GOING SEVENTEEN Is Still Part of the Fun

GOING SEVENTEEN gives CARATs another way to keep up with the group while military service changes which members are available at any given time.

If you’re new to SEVENTEEN, this is also a very good excuse to start catching up on YouTube.

Good luck stopping once you start.

4. All 13 Members Have Renewed Their Contracts

And here’s the really good news. All 13 members have renewed their contracts with PLEDIS Entertainment for a second time.

Basically, the SEVENTEEN story is very much still going.

5. What About a Full 13-Member Comeback?

You’ll see CARATs online talking about 2028 or 2029 as a possible window for all 13 members to be available again based on expected military timelines.

But that is not an official full-group comeback date, so don’t start the countdown quite yet.

For now? Explore the solo projects. Get into the sub-units. Go back through the albums.

If you’re a new CARAT, you have a lot of catching up to do anyway. 💎

What Makes SEVENTEEN Unique in K-Pop?

You’ll hear SEVENTEEN called self-producing idols a lot. And it’s for a reason.

The members have been heavily involved in their creative work since debut. Woozi plays a major role in songwriting and production alongside longtime collaborator BUMZU. Members of the Hip-Hop Team contribute their own verses, while Hoshi and other members have contributed to choreography and performance development.

Then there’s the dancing. Getting 13 people to move together is hard. SEVENTEEN somehow makes it look easy.

Their performances use all 13 members to create huge formations, visual waves, and crazy transitions. Watch one SEVENTEEN dance practice and pay attention to what’s happening behind whoever is singing.

Fun SEVENTEEN Facts Every New CARAT Should Know

Okay, you know the members. Now for the random facts you’ll actually want to tell your friends.

Their Fandom Colors Have 2016 Lore

SEVENTEEN’s official colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity, were also Pantone’s Colors of the Year in 2016.

If that transported you back a decade, welcome. We’re nostalgic again.

BSS Has Been Causing Chaos Since 2018

Hoshi, DK, and Seungkwan make up BSS, aka BooSeokSoon, SEVENTEEN’s first official sub-unit.

The name combines parts of their real names: Boo Seungkwan, Lee Seokmin, and Kwon Soonyoung.

Three big personalities. One unit. You get the idea.

CARAT Goes Back to Their Debut Era

SEVENTEEN performed Shining Diamond before debut and released 17 Carat as their debut EP in 2015.

The fandom name CARAT continues that diamond theme, with fans helping SEVENTEEN shine. 💎

Yes, Fans Have Compared Vernon to Leonardo DiCaprio

Fans have compared Vernon to a young Leonardo DiCaprio for years. The resemblance even has a nickname: Vercaprio.

Once you see it, we’ll let you decide.

Their Debut EP Made Some Serious Noise

17 Carat spent 11 weeks on Billboard’s World Albums chart in 2015.

More than a decade later, SEVENTEEN is still going.

Not bad for a group whose name requires a math equation to explain.

Essential SEVENTEEN Songs Every New CARAT Should Know

Trying to listen to the entire SEVENTEEN K-pop discography at once is ambitious.

We respect it. But you don’t have to.

Not sure where to start? Add these to your playlist:

  • VERY NICE (아주 NICE): Peak SEVENTEEN energy and basically required CARAT listening.

  • Left & Right: Bright, catchy, and an easy place to start.

  • HOT: For huge performance energy.

  • Super: If you want to understand why everyone talks about SEVENTEEN’s choreography.

  • Don’t Wanna Cry: Emotional pop and iconic choreography.

  • MAESTRO: Darker, dramatic, and theatrical.

  • Thanks: One for the feelings.

  • Circles: Another emotional fan favorite.

  • Shining Diamond: Take it back to early SEVENTEEN.

Basically, there’s a SEVENTEEN song for whatever mood you’re in.

What Is a SEVENTEEN Concert Actually Like?

Okay. You learned the members. You picked a bias. You bought a ticket.

Now what?

A SEVENTEEN concert is big, loud, interactive, and very CARAT. Expect sharp choreography, huge group performances, unit stages, fan chants, talking with the crowd, emotional songs, plenty of jokes, and an arena full of lightsticks.

And then there’s the encore. If you learn one thing before your first SEVENTEEN concert, make it this:

“VERY NICE” is never over when you think it’s over.

The never-ending VERY NICE, aka AJU NICE, encore has become one of SEVENTEEN’s most famous concert traditions. The song ends. You think the concert is ending.

And then… AJU NICE!

Here we go again.

The group has been known to repeat the song again and again during encores while running around the stage, dancing, talking to fans, and basically turning the end of the concert into one giant CARAT party.

So yes, wear comfortable shoes.

Your First SEVENTEEN Concert? Bring This

You don’t need to arrive with a suitcase full of merch to have fun.

But a few things can make concert night much easier:

  • Your phone and ticket

  • ID

  • Portable charger

  • Wallet or card holder

  • Venue-approved bag

  • Comfortable shoes

  • Earplugs

  • Your SEVENTEEN lightstick, if you have one

  • Extra batteries if your lightstick needs them

  • A photocard or tiny bias mascot for the obligatory concert pics

  • Water, if your venue allows it

Most importantly: check your specific venue’s rules before you leave.

Bag sizes, cameras, signs, outside food and drinks, and other rules can change from venue to venue.

And no, you don’t need a lightstick to belong there.

If you have one, amazing. If you don’t, you’re still included and guaranteed to have a great time.

Charge your phone, learn the AJU NICE chorus, and prepare to leave with absolutely no voice.
